After the postponement of the band’s comeback, WayV has officially dropped 4th mini album ‘Phantom’ — and the music video of its lead track — and it topped the iTunes chart in the Middle East.
iTunes ranking
It dominated the iTunes Top Album chart, including the Pop chart in Oman on the day of its release. According to SM Entertainment, it also topped the iTunes Top Album chart in Australia, Turkey, India, Brazil, Portugal, Armenia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The C-pop group’s mini album took the second spot on the All-Genres chart and topped the Pop chart in Saudi Arabia, while the lead track ‘Phantom’ debuted second on the All-Genres and Pop songs chart on iTunes.
In the UAE, the musical release landed second on the All-Genres chart and topped the Pop chart. It also dominated the Korea’s Hanteo Chart and Circle Chart’s Retail Album Chart.
Within an hour of its release, WayV’s songs debuted on QQ Music, China’s largest music platform, SM revealed.
Phantom of the Opera-inspired
Inspired by the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ the dance-pop track with a bombastic chorus compares hardships and challenges to phantoms and is full of willingness to overcome them. The music video is a cinematic, dramatic masterpiece, featuring evocative and fluid choreography.
From ‘Diamonds Only’ and ‘Good Life’ to ‘Try My Luck’, the overall mini album contains various musical elements, including trap and hip-hop beats, perfectly encapsulating the boy group’s vocals. Previously released tracks ‘Low Low’ by Ten and YangYang and ‘Back To You’ by Kun and Xiaojun have also been included in the mini album.
Lucas’s absence
The Chinese boy band’s comeback features only six members as Lucas is currently on an indefinite hiatus since last year. Online users who identified themselves as his ex-girlfriends accused him of cheating and gaslighting.
WayV debuted as a China-based subunit of boy band NCT with seven members: Winwin, Hendery, Kun, Ten, Yangyang, Lucas, and Xiaojun. The boy band’s latest release was its third EP ‘Kick Back’ last March.
