This year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit, or better known as the Met Gala, made its dazzling return, with actors, athletes, poets and performers instructed to wear outfits that fit in with the exhibit theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
Among the crowd of some 400 attendees — all of whom were either vaccinated or had tested negative for COVID-19 — was Rosé and CL, becoming the first female K-Pop stars to the grace the red carpet at the prestigious event. Only male K-pop musicians, such as Psy, Rain, and EXO member Lay, previously managed to get a ticket to the event.
Born Roseanne Park, the BLACKPINK member posed on the carpet alongside creative director at Saint Laurent Anthony Vaccarello in a classic little black dress with an asymmetrical bow detail on the front, topping it off with a metal and enamel choker and drop earrings. The K-Pop star is the high-end brand’s ambassador since summer last year, following in the footsteps of Kate Moss, Zoë Kravitz, Debbie Harry, Cara Delevingne and Courtney Love, all of whom have served as ambassadors and muses.
As for CL, the former 2NE1 member came in a custom Alexander Wang denim hanbok with cotton rib logo underwear, fusing quintessential Americana with traditional Korean attire.
She completed the look with sparkly heels, pointy nude nails, and sculptured blonde hair. CL herself is no stranger to the US fashion scene. CL has been Wang’s muse since 2016, and became the first Korean face for Beyoncé’s athleisure line, Ivy Park.
The annual event, often heralded as the celebrity world’s “party of the year”, was largely maskless, defying the global pandemic that forced the cancellation of last year’s event. Actor Timothee Chalamet, poet Amanda Gorman, singer Billie Eilish and tennis player Naomi Osaka co-chaired the Met Gala.
