Japanese boy group ONE OR EIGHT has put a new spin on Rihanna’s iconic 2007 hit ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ with their new single ‘DSTM,’ blending rap, melodic hooks, and smooth hip-hop for a fresh reinterpretation.
Produced by Stargate, the legendary team behind Rihanna’s original version, ‘DSTM’ brings together global talents, including up-and-coming American songwriters, to inject new life into a classic. Stargate, known for shaping the sound of modern R&B, infuses the track with a forward-looking flair while honoring the essence of the original.
“When the guys in One Or Eight wanted to do a remake of our Rihanna song ‘Don’t Stop The Music,’ we were all in,” Stargate said in a statement. “They brought their own unique flavor and personality to all their parts. It was a lot of fun revisiting this song with them. The fact that One Or Eight are Japanese, Rihanna is Bajan, the hook is from Cameroon and we’re Norwegian, just shows that music really brings people together.”
Accompanying the release is a cinematic music video that reimagines the song in a sci-fi universe.
Set in a hyper-futuristic city stripped of music and art due to unchecked technological progress, the video follows ONE OR EIGHT as they embark on an interdimensional quest to restore the soul of music. Directed by Glenn Michael (The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd) and edited by Mykyta Bereg (Madonna, Yeat, Tyla Yaweh), the visual is a full-throttle, VFX-heavy journey brought to life by Gianluigi Carella of Impossible Objects, known for work with Disney, Warner Brothers, and Nike.
The group’s latest milestone comes on the heels of their special award win for ‘Upcoming Dance & Vocal Group’ at this year’s MTV VMAJ. Their debut live performance of ‘DSTM’ during the ceremony left the crowd buzzing, further solidifying their reputation as rising stars to watch. Just this month, Nikkei Entertainment! also named ONE OR EIGHT among its ‘100 New Stars of 2025.’
“I was so excited when I first heard the demo for ‘DTSM’, but was also a little nervous as Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ is so iconic and loved by fans,” shared member TSUBASA. “ I hope everyone who listens to this song feels inspired, just like we do, to keep pursuing their challenges, dreams, and hopes as long as ‘DSTM’ keeps playing.”
About ONE OR EIGHT
Comprised of eight members — MIZUKI, NEO, REIA, RYOTA, SOUMA, TAKERU, TSUBASA, and YUGA — ONE OR EIGHT draws inspiration from a Japanese idiom meaning “All or Nothing,” reflecting their bold, no-holds-barred approach to music and life. With the powerful tagline “BET ON YOURSELF,” the group blends hip-hop and pop sensibilities while proudly showcasing their Japanese heritage through multilingual lyrics, bold choreography, and a cutting-edge streetwear aesthetic.
The band’s debut single ‘Don’t Tell Nobody,’ produced by Ryan Tedder (Taylor Swift, Adele) and David Stewart (BTS), topped the Billboard Japan Heatseekers Songs chart. Follow-up tracks like ‘KAWASAKI (with Big Sean)’ have charted internationally, including a number 5 spot on the U.S. iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart. The octet also released another version of their track “KAWASAKI’ featuring Felip, a member of the renowned Filipino P-POP group SB19, and Vietnamese-American artist thủy, and another with Korean-American rapper pH-1.
