RM, a member of K-pop sensation BTS, has donated 100 million won (AED 263,700) for the second consecutive year to preserve and restore overseas Korean cultural heritage.
He asked that the donation be used to preserve, restore and utilize artifacts outside of the country, Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation revealed. It will also go toward creating an art brochure introducing Korean paintings requested by RM.
The K-Pop star’s donation in September 2021 went toward the preservation treatment of hwarot, a traditional Korean bridal gown from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). His 100 million won was publicly disclosed at the time.
From making generous donations to posting artworks on social media, the K-Pop star — whose real name is Kim Nam-joon — is a well-known art aficionado. Earlier this month, RM recorded the audio guide for 10 Korean art pieces that have been exhibited at the ‘The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art’ exhibition at the LACMA, in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), since September 11.
In 2020, he also donated $84,000 (AED 308,500) on his 27th birthday to Korea’s MMCA Foundation to support the printing of rare and out-of-print art books.
