BLACKPINK released ‘Pink Venom,’ their first single in nearly two years, just ahead the K-Pop group’s nine-month world tour.
The act’s lead single off of the foursome’s forthcoming album blends the band’s signature hip-hop beats with the sound of “geomungo,” a traditional Korean six-stringed zither.
Their return was accompanied by an eye-popping, eclectic music video, featuring traditional Korean instruments and head-spinning fashion looks.
“Since the moment of our debut under the name of BLACKPINK, we have always said our charm is this conflicting image,” Jennie said during an online press conference, according to Yonhap News Agency.
“We wanted to describe the band using such words as ‘lovely venom’ or ‘cute venom’ that can best represent us. This song portrayed BLACKPINK itself.”
Hit in the UAE
BLACKPINK’s genre-hopping return was a successful hit in the UAE. The track jumped to the top spot on UAE iTunes all-genres, K-Pop, and pop charts four hours after its release.
The music video is currently the fifth most trending video for music and the ninth most popular video in the country as of the time of writing.
BLACKPINK’s track previously took the second spot on UAE iTunes all-genres and pop charts within an hour of its release. It topped the K-Pop chart on the music app.
BLACKPINK crew—Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa—have become one of K-Pop’s biggest global success stories since their debut in 2016 under label YG Entertainment. Their talents have caught the attention of stars such as Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa, all of whom brought the quartet on their respective tracks.
What’s next?
BLACKPINK’s new album, ‘Born Pink,’ is set to drop on September 16, marking the group’s first full-group release in a year and 10 months since album ‘The Album’ in October 2020.
The quartet will kick off their world tour in October, starting in Seoul until June next year. They will also perform in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
The band will become the first K-Pop girl group to take the stage at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards in the US on August 28.
