ARMYs rejoice! BTS has earned their first major Grammy nomination on Tuesday in the best performance by a pop duo or group category for chart-sweeping single ‘Dynamite’.
BTS have long been deserving of their nomination, that’s for sure, and it’s been their – especially Suga – goal in the US market for years!
Their nomination at the 63rd annual Grammy awards show makes them the first South Korean pop artist to be nominated at “music’s biggest night”.
The members shared their livestreamed reactions to hearing the news on their Twitter account. Members Jungkook, RM and Jimin spring up from a sofa, clap and cheer in joy as they hear they have been nominated in the 19-second clip, while V appeared to be in quite a shock.https://twitter.com/BTS_twt/status/1331298544834076672
“Thank you to everyone who listened to our music and empathized with it in difficult times,” the band said in a Korean tweet. “Above all, it is you ARMY that made the miracle of (us becoming) a Grammy-nominated artist. Thank you and love you always.”
The Grammys is considered the highest honors in the music industry. With this nomination, it marks another major step for BTS, proving their global popularity and breaking barriers as they become part of the mainstream US music market.
Other nominees in the category include “Intentions” by Justin Bieber, featuring Quavo, “Rain On Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift’s “Exile,” featuring Bon Iver, all of whom are listed for collaborations.
If the group wins first Grammy next year, the septet will become the first South Korean act to have won prizes at all three major American music award, including Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards.
However, they are the first Korean artist to be nominated in the pop category. Soprano Jo Su-mi won a Grammy for best opera recording in 1992 for album “Die Frau Ohne Schatten,” conducted by Georg Solti. Recording engineer Hwang Byeong-joon also took home an award in the classical categories.
The short lists features an mix of pop powerhouses and feisty chart-toppers, yet it was another letdown for K-Pop the Academy has seemingly been glacial to accept – despite trying to be slightly more inclusive with their choice of nominees.
BTS is up for a single award in the pop categories, meaning it was shut out of the general field even though “Dynamite” was considered a strong contender for Record or Song of the Year.
JYP Entertainment’s K-Pop girl group Blackpink, which has collaborated with the likes of Cardi B, Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa, was surprisingly left out of the Best New Artist race.
Despite this, BTS’ nomination at the 63rd annual Grammy awards may pave the way for other K-pop acts and songs to break into the highlight competitive American music industry next time around.
The Grammys will be held on January 31 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles where comedian Trevor Noah will be making his hosting debut.
