K Pop stars are major global fashion influencers and BTS are no strangers to this. They continue not only create art with their music but also leave quite an impact on the fashion scene!
With this year’s public appearances at an all-time low, K-Pop sensation BTS and member RM have secured spots in the Lyst’s annual Year In Fashion report, a data-heavy list of the most popular brands, products, people, trends and movements calculated over the past 12 months.
Power Dresser
Kim Namjoon, or better known as RM, is considered the most influential member of the K-Pop group, and is among one of top 10 celebrities whose personal style choice drove the biggest spikes in searches, sales, news coverage and social media mentions based on the platform’s 100 million shoppers.
This first started when the leader was spotted wearing a white turtleneck with a white jacket during the group’s visit in New York in February. That same week, fashion searches for similar menswear pieces spiked 67%.
Additionally, when the septet performed their hit song ‘Dynamite’ at the 2020 MTV VMAs wearing Gucci, searches for the high-end brand ties (+28%) and three-piece suits (+12%) spiked within 24 hours, that global fashion search platform reported.
Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Lizzo, Paul Mescal, Kate Middleton, Travis Scott, among others, are other celebs that garnered the most attention for their style choices in 2020 and inspired people’s shopping habits.
Pop Culture Influence
Aside from power dressers, BTS have also made it to the ‘Pop Culture’ list. When record-breaking group dropped their ‘Dynamite’ music video, searches for their’ ‘90s-style Kangol hats surged by 128%. According to YouTube, the MV clocked in 101.1 million videos within 24 hours of its release.
Other top moments in pop culture that shaped how consumer shopped include Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Wap’, and more.
BTS are the only K-Pop groups to make it to the report – and keep leaving a powerful impact on the fashion scene. Alongside EXO’s Sehun, they previously made it on the 2018 report, spiking searches for brands such as Moschino and Chrome Hearts.
