‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area’ topped the Netflix’s top 10 non-English series this week three days after its release on the platform, with 33.7 million hours viewed.
Premiered on June 24, the Korean adaptation of global hit of ‘La Casa De Papel’ debuted at number one in South Korea, Indonesia, Morocco, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. It also made the top 10 list in 51 countries, that includes Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, during the June 20 – 26 week.
The show follows genius strategist and eight top-class thieves as they stage a spectacular heist in the Korean Peninsula.
“The geopolitical element of a North and South Korea on the verge of reunification adds to the powder keg of tension that makes the original so beloved,” said Keo Lee, Director of Content, Netflix Korea, at an earlier panel. “We were very lucky when we received this pitch from Ryu and the producing team, which felt like the right framework for a remake that would be respectful to the original while bringing something new that fans in Korea and globally would appreciate.”
‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area’ stars Yoo Ji-tae, Kim Yunjin, Park Hae-soo, Jun Jong-seo, among others. It was directed by Kim Hong-sun, written by Ryu Yong-jae, Kim Hwan-chae and Choe Sung-jun, and produced by BH Entertainment and Zium Content.
The action-packed series is among the latest Korean shows to lead Netflix’s top 10 list globally, that includes ‘All Of Us Are Dead,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Juvenile Justice,’ and ‘Business Proposal.’
