Stray Kids’ latest release, ‘KARMA,’ is more than just an album— it’s a testament to their hard-earned seven-year journey, channeling both their growth and the struggles.
Arriving on August 22, the boy group’s fourth full-length Korean album doubles as a victory lap following their record-breaking ‘dominATE’ world tour, which spanned 11 months, 34 cities, and 54 shows, many of them in stadiums, across Asia, Latin America, Europe, North America, and Oceania.
Resilience defined
The tour became a major inspiration for the project, which is the fourth-generation K-pop group’s first comeback and first album of the year, crafted over the course of those 11 months, leader Bang Chan said at a press conference in Seoul on release day.
Rapper Changbin explained that the title ‘KARMA’ symbolizes the fruition of the group’s relentless hard work, their “good karma.”
The lead single, ‘CEREMONY,’ captures this moment of triumph with precision. Built on a foundation of trap-driven EDM and layered with funk-inspired rhythms, the track embodies the exhilaration of perseverance rewarded. Its music video leans into a sports theme, with each member cast as an athlete—whether behind the wheel of a race car, holding a tennis racket, or charging down a football field—reinforcing the idea of competition, endurance, and eventual victory. It also features a surprise cameo by esports legend Faker.
The 11-track album, produced by JYP Entertainment boy band’s in-house production team, 3RACHA — Bang Chan, Changbin and Han — also includes ‘Bleep,’ ‘Creed,’ ‘Mess,’‘ In My Head,’‘ Half Time,’ ‘Phoenix,’ ‘Ghost,’ and ’0801,’ plus two remixes of the title track. It is their first major Korean release since the digital single ‘Mixtape: dominATE’ earlier this year, and comes two years after their 2023 studio album ‘★★★★★ (5-STAR).’
For Hyunjin, the album is as much a gift to their fans, known as STAY, as it is a celebration for the group themselves and a new chapter. Reflecting on sold-out stadiums during the tour, he said, “If there’s one thing I’ll remember at my very last moment, it will probably be how STAY looked at us onstage.”
The numbers tell their own story: Stray Kids are the only act in Billboard 200 history to notch six consecutive No. 1 albums, becoming the first artist ever to do so in the chart’s 69-year history and tying BTS for the most chart-toppers by a K-pop group. But the members are careful to frame their success not as a race against others, but as a relentless charge forward together.
It’s this blend of humility and audacity—what the members call being “crazy” about their music, their fans, and their journey—that defines ‘KARMA.’ The album is both a checkpoint and a promise: Stray Kids are not slowing down. And for fans in the Middle East, who saw glimpses of the group’s performance at EXPO 2020 Dubai in 2022, the energy of ‘CEREMONY’ feels like an anthem waiting to be staged in regional arenas.
Regional, global spotlight
Stray Kids’ ‘CEREMONY’ has made a strong impact across the Middle East, according to YouTube Music charts. On August 22, YouTube Music Charts show that in Egypt, ‘CEREMONY’ recorded the fourth-highest debut for a music video and ranked No. 84 on the most popular chart. In Saudi Arabia, it was the most successful debut of the day and placed No. 31 on the most popular ranking. Meanwhile, in the UAE, the video had the second-highest debut and landed at No. 26 on the most popular chart.
YouTube Music Charts does not disclose data for other MENA countries.
Globally, the video was the second most popular and held the highest debut for a music video on its release day.
‘Ceremony’ ranked atop the iTunes all-genre chart in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with the album ‘Karma’ also dominating the all-genre rankings in the two countries, as of August 23. The album also topped the iTunes album chart globally.
On the day of release, the album logged more than 2 million sales and topped Hanteo’s weekly physical album chart and Circle Chart’s weekly retail album chart in Korea. On Spotify, the lead track drew in around 8 million streams globally to date.
